Netflix Suffers Outage

The Netflix website suffered an hour long outage last Monday.  The site reportedly went out at 3:40 pm but notice of the site’s downtime was posted on the website’s front door at 4:00 pm.

“We’re sorry, the Netflix website is temporarily unavailable. Our shipping centers are continuing to send and receive DVDs , so your movies will be processed as usual. And you can still instantly watch movies via your Netflix ready device.”

This recent outage is one of several that has affected Netflix costly.  During such an incident in August of this year, they were unable to ship DVDs out to customers for several days due to a hardware glitch.  Another malfunction in March also resulted to delays.

There are also recent complaints of the users of the Netflix player Roku that they have been receiving inferior video quality in the videos they are streaming from the Roku box.  This may be an unrelated event and Roku executives explain they suspect a defective content distribution network (CDN) is the culprit.

Netflix has 100,000 available titles with approximately 8.2 million subscribers.  The company is currently investigating both incidents.
