Friday, December 18th, 2009

Lately, it seems that social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have been receiving viruses directly to its members. It was said that this Friday at 10 pm, that the Twitter site was hacked and defaced.

Twitter.com is said to be down. Some tweets are getting through at the moment because parts of the API are up. The search seems to be working. It is suggested that if you use the same password on your twitter account with other accounts, now would be a good time to change your password on those other accounts.

It was said that there is a history between Iran and Twitter. It was well noted and covered in the media that Twitter was used as a tool during the Iranian election protests. The US government actually intervened to assure that Twitter was available to the protestors in Tehran and around the country. This attack maybe an act of reprisal from groups who were not happy with the role that Twitter played during the protests.

But then, luckily that Twitter.com is back. The company even updated the status blog.

Ousted Gov. Blagojevich, INDICTED!

Just today, the former Governor Rod Blagojevich was indicted on charges of trying to auction off President Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat plus another corruption allegation that he tried to extort a congressman by a federal grand jury according to Reuters.

It can be remembered that Blagojevich was elected in 2002 and he was in his second term when he got kicked out from office nine weeks ago by the state legislature after he was arrested in December.

A sweeping 19-count federal indictment reads that Blagojevich discussed with aides the possibility of getting a Cabinet post in the new president’s administration, a high-paying job or a substantial fund-raising assistance in exchange for the Senate seat.

It alleges that Blagojevich told an aide that he wanted to stall a $2 million state grant to a school that was championed by a congressman, whose identity was not disclosed, until the lawmaker’s brother held a political fund-raiser for the governor.

Blagojevich’s brother Robert plus two former aides, a lobbyist and a former fund-raiser were likewise indicted while Blagojevich’s wife, Patti, was not.

On the part of Blagojevich, he claims that he did nothing wrong and that he is a victim of a political witch-hunt. He further promised that he will fight the charges in court and has a book contract to tell his side.

In case all those who were indicted will be convicted, they will be facing more than 300 years in prison, at least $4 million in fines and restitution as stated in the indictment.

The governor was caught on court-approved wiretaps describing the Senate seat as something so valuable “you just don’t give it away for nothing.” Blagojevich added he might appoint himself if he could not get anything for the seat. Other than this evidence, it is not clear what kind of evidence US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has, but according to legal experts. they wouldn’t bet against him.
