The BossGeorge Michael Steinbrenner III (July 4, 1930 – July 13, 2010) was the principal owner and the managing partner of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees.

His leadership and his role in his team made him one of baseball’s most controversial executive. Being known to many as a hands-on figure, he earned the nickname “The Boss.” His tendency to meddle in daily on-field decisions, and to hire and fire managers led then- Yankees skipper Dallas Green to give him the derisive nickname “Manager George.”

During Steinbrenner’s ownership from 1973 to his death, the longest in club history, the Yankees earned 11 pennants and 7 World Series titles.

He died after suffering a heart attack in his Tampa home on the morning of July 13, 2010, day of the 81st All-Star Game.

Ortiz vs RamirezCompeting in his fourth Home Run Derby as part of the All-Star festivities, Boston Red Sox’s hitter David Ortiz, and finally took home the big prize Monday, out slugging Florida Marlins’ shortstop Hanley Ramirez in the final, 11-5.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Ramirez, who slugged 26 homers in all and became the first Marlins player to reach the final of the derby.

“He’s like my dad. We always hung out when I was in Boston. I used to go to his house, like a son and father. I have a lot of respect for him. For me, it was a little hard to compete against him. We just pulled for each other. He has a good heart. He’s one of the best guys I’ve met in my life.”

Ramirez, the reigning National League batting champion, matched Ortiz for the first two rounds with 21 homers before he said he “ran out of gas” in the final. Ortiz had participated in the Home Run Derby three previous times, but never had won. It was Ramirez’s first derby.

Is the deal worth it?

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Joshua (“Josh“) Malik Childress (born June 20, 1983 in Harbor City, California) is an American professional basketball player.

NBA

During the 2004-05 NBA season, Childress emerged as one of two proJosh Childressmising rookie talents for the Atlanta Hawks, along with Josh Smith; as the season went on, the two showed improved play, minutes, and production. Childress ranked third among rookies in double-doubles in the 2004-05 season, behind only Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard. He was also voted to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

Reportedly, The Phoenix Suns, which lost Amare to Knicks, have acquired Josh through a sign-and-trade deal with the Hawks, who get back a second-round pick in 2012. The deal is worth at least $30 million over five years.

During his four seasons in Atlanta, Childress averaged 11.1 points, shooting 52 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc.

With Steve Nash still at the helm, it is still one heck of a ball club. Josh should be a great addition to the Suns’ run and gun attack.

Blake In, Farmar Out

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

SteveBlake_LakersNBA – It has been confirmed that Blake agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal will net the former Trail Blazer $16 million over four seasons, much more money than the Blazers would have offered the guard.

The Lakers have won consecutive championship with Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown filling the point guard position, but all the three became free agents this summer. Farmar, has been tied to the Pacers, and was not expected to be retained by L.A. under any scenario.

Blake split last season between the Blazers and the Clippers. A career 39-percent three-point shooter, Blake would seem to fit the Lakers’ needs well. With Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol handling scoring duties, the Lakers have needed a point guard who can shoot, make few mistakes and give effort on defense. Fisher has been an ace in all three categories in all 11 seasons he has spent in L.A., but at age 35 is losing what little quickness he had.

Blake,30, is far less tested in post-season play, having appeared in only 15 career playoff games. Fisher has appeared in 199 playoff games over his career, 183 of those coming with the Lakers.

If Lakers could still keep Fisher, Steve Blake will be the back-up point guard for the back-to-back Champ.
