Adderall Abuse

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Alarming studies have shown that students are now using the ADHD drug Adderall to improve school grades.

“In a way that athletes have used steroids and other medications in the past to enhance their athletic performance, Adderall is actually being used to kind of pseudo-enhance their academic performance,” states Heather Hayes, a licensed professional counselor.

Some students also use Ritalin another ADHD drug.  These drugs are amphetamines and are used to treat ADHD, a chemical imbalance in the brain which make it hard for the patient to focus.  Adderall and Ritalin is a fast mixture of amphetamines which acts on the brain mimicking dopamine which increases alertness and concentration.  Generally, people with ADHD find it hard to focus on tasks and are impulsive which gets them in trouble.  Amphetamines help curb these traits enabling them to function.

But students nowadays have found Adderall helps them concentrate and study during exams.  Nineteen-year-old Marisa McCorkle has been using Adderall for two years.

I use it for various reasons,” she says, “like tests, it helps me on tests. [And it] helps me stay awake, and [with] studying.”

One of the biggest problems with recreational drug use is that these kids are unaware of the potential dangers these drugs possess.  They might think that a single pill wont matter but that pill will most likely lead to a second and then a third and then we get the whole “snowball effect”.

Twenty-year-old “Dave,” a college student, says, “I think it’s pretty safe unless you’re taking five at a time.”

Hayes says that parents need to make the dangers of drug use to teens clear.  ADHD meds and other drugs should be used only with medical supervision and should not be used to enhance concentration when studying.

“Bottom line,” says Hayes, “Adderall is as dangerous of a drug when unsupervised as any other medication. It’s addictive and it is dangerous.”

Hayes Inducted into the Hall of Fame

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

After the long wait, NFL Football star Bob Hayes was inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier today.  “Bullet Bob” was an Olympic Gold Medalist for the 100 meter in the 1964 games.  He is the only Footballer to have won both an Olympic medal and a Super Bowl Championship.

Although Hayes was eligible for admission to the Hall of Fame years ago, many believe that his problems in the field was to blame for the delay.  During his career in the NFL he struggled with drugs and alcohol and even spent 10 months in a Texas prison after he was arrested during a drug buy-bust operation.

Sad to say the induction came seven years too late.  Hayes died in 2002, he was 59.  However, even from within the grave, he managed to thank those that mattered through his sister Lucille Hester.

“He left a statement for me to read in case this day came” she said.

He thanked his teammates at the Dallas Cowboys, and everyone who supported him and even those who did not vote for him.  He also thanked Roger Staubach and the San Francisco 49ers with whom he ended his career with.  He expressed gratitude to his school,  Florida A&M and concluded by thanking his hometown of Jacksonville, Dallas and the state of Texas.

“Just thank everyone in the whole world. I love you all,” he wrote.

Earlier last week, his teammate Staubach said he was cheering for Hayes to make it to the Hall.  He said Hayes revolutionized the passing game, changing the way defense was played.  And sated that if Hayes were alive today, he would be the fastest player in the NFL.

Another one of Hayes’ staunchest supporters was Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones.  In 2001 he made sure that Hayes’ was inducted into the team’s Ring of Fame.

“This is a great day for Bob Hayes’ legacy, his family and the Dallas Cowboys.” Jones said.

Other players voted in were: defensive end Bruce Smith, cornerback Rod Woodson, outside linebacker Derrick Thomas, guard Randall McDaniel and owner Ralph Wilson.

Rod Blagojevich IS OUT!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was thrown out of the office Thursday.  The impeachment court voted unanimously to have Blagojevich fired from his job.  The former Governor was accused of selling the Senate seat vacated by Barak Obama to the highest bidder.

He is the first US Governor to be impeached in 20 years.  The four-day trial voted 59-0 to convict Blagojevich of abuse of power.  The same vote also barred him from running for any political office in Illinois.

“He failed the test of character. He is beneath the dignity of the state of Illinois. He is no longer worthy to be our governor,” said Sen. Matt Murphy, a Republican from suburban Chicago.

Federal prosecutors are likewise drawing corruption charges on the beleaguered ex-Governor.  The conclusion of the trial bought an end to what one lawmaker has dubbed as the “freak show”.  Over the last few month, Blagojevich has found himself isolated and without a friend and the entire political establishment against him.  He had boycotted the first three days of the trial calling the proceedings a ‘kangaroo court”.  He showed up during the last day to plead for his job.

However, many locals are glad to see him go.  “It’s very embarrassing. I think it’s a shame that with our city and Illinois, everybody thinks we’re all corrupt,” says Gene Ciepierski, 54 a local.

President Barak Obama said: “Today ends a painful episode for Illinois.  For months, the state had been crippled by a crisis of leadership. Now that cloud has lifted.”

Lt. Governor Pat Quinn was promptly sworn in as the state’s new governor.  The 60 year old former State Treasurer said that he would work to “restore the faith of the people of Illinois in the integrity of their government.”

In fact, it is anticipated that roughly about 1 billion people around the world will be tuning in to watch this America’s biggest sporting event of the year.

The Super Bowl is the Championship game of the National Football League or NFL. The Super Bowl XLIII shall be held at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Florida and that would be on Febuary 1, 2009. On that day, Pittsburgh Steelers shall take on the Arizona Cardinals. Kick-off is scheduled for a 6:20 EST start time on NBC. The National Anthem shall be performed by former American Idol Contestant and Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson.

Super Bowl Sunday has become more than just a football match between the two best teams in the NFL. There will be various concerts and interactive events which are scheduled all throughout the week. Obviously, this event became more of an annual festival.

The Super Bowl Bash presented by Pepsi Bash, in turn, shall be a two-day event whereby Rhianna, Fall Out Boy, Lifehouse and Grammy Award winner Enrique Iglesias shall be the featured performers. There will also be a Super Bowl party hosted by the R&B crooner, T-Pain, this weekend as presented by Vibe Magazine and Mixcast.
